Responsibilities:

BAM/PFA houses collections of books, periodicals, still photographs, posters, and documentation files of film reviews, publicity materials, program notes and other ephemera, over 16,000 films and videotapes and over 18,000 artworks. Collections are cataloged in a variety of systems and are available for on-site research use by UC students, faculty and the general public. The Cataloger and Indexer catalogs films, videos, books, and serials; indexes film-related documents; applies metadata to digital images of BAM/PFA artworks and other digital files; and performs administrative duties related to organizing the collections. Materials are in a variety of languages, including some in non-Roman alphabets. The Cataloger and Indexer reports to the Head of the PFA Library and Film Study Center.

Cataloging (55%)
-Performs original and copy cataloging of films, videos, books and serials directly into OCLC.
-Downloads records into UC Berkeley’s Millenium and BAM/PFA’s local Library World databases and adds local restricted data.
-Catalogs in MARC21 format; applies national and film-specific cataloging rules as appropriate, such as Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd edition, revised (AACR2r); Resource Description and Access (RDA); and Archival Moving Image Materials, 2nd edition (AMIM2).
-Performs complex authority and headings work for personal and corporate names, series, and subjects.

Document Indexing (35%)
-Evaluates film-related documents to determine indexing data and enters data into customized relational database.
-Adheres to AACR2r descriptive format and in-house indexing guidelines and Library of Congress Authorities. Assigns index terms to films and documents, including document source, title, author, film title(s), director(s), country(ies) of production, genre and subject.
-Provides PDFs of restricted documents to patrons on request.
-Performs regular quality control and workflow oversight; maintains statistics.

Image Management (10%)
-Assists Digital Media staff and Library Head in analyzing, prioritizing and migrating high priority legacy images to UC Berkeley’s Research Hub.
-Locates records in BAM’s art collection FileMaker Pro database and adds appropriate metadata in Research Hub according to BAM/PFA image management policies and procedures.
-Devises and implements quality control procedures to ensure that images uploaded by all BAM/PFA departments adhere to established guidelines.

Required Qualifications:
-Experience in moving image, monograph, and serials cataloging in MARC21 format.
-Experience in full-level original and copy cataloging in many languages.
-Knowledge of data and image management concepts and indexing practices and procedures.
-Excellent computer skills including familiarity with relational databases and aptitude for quickly learning a variety of computer software and systems.
-Familiarity with handling archival film and operating viewing tables and rewinds.
-Ability to perform multiple tasks efficiently, maintaining a high level of accuracy and consistency.
-Knowledge of cinema history and art history.
-Strong writing and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
-Proficiency in use of OCLC, Millenium, and Library World or other related software for creation of MARC records.
-Experience with digital image collections.

Salary: 
The annual salary range for this position is $41,412 – $43,320. There is an excellent benefits package including three weeks vacation and benefits for eligible family members.
