Fine Arts & Architecture Student Librarian

This position regularly requires the part-time staff member to develop and lead one-time and on-going departmental projects. Projects may include working with physical and digital collections, creating online learning tools, conducting original research, and cultivating work relationships with full-time library colleagues, as well as individuals and organizations on campus and in regional arts, architecture, and planning communities. The person hired will also staff the Fine Arts reference desk in the early evenings a few days a week, and will be put into rotation as the sole librarian at the Knowledge Commons Service Desk on Saturday afternoons. Training will be provided.

Preference will be given to:

• a student working toward a Master’s in Library Science (or similar) degree, or who has equivalent library work experience.
• Academic background in visual arts, performing arts, art history, architecture, planning, history, or communication.
• Experience with digital image scanning, graphic design, and/or multimedia editing software (such as Adobe CS suite, Final Cut Pro, etc).

Archives Internship at the Guggenheim Museum Archives–Fall 2013

The Guggenheim Museum Archives seeks a current or recent graduate student for its Fall 2013 internship. This unpaid internship requires a minimum commitment of two days a week from mid-September to mid-December.

Responsibilities:

• Assist with accessions

• Arrange and rehouse collection materials

• Write and encoding finding aid

• Assist with onsite research appointments

• Write content for monthly newsletter and weekly Findings blog

Requirements:

• Current or recent Masters of Library Science student with a specialization in archives

• Knowledge of basic archival principles of processing, arranging and describing collections

• Familiarity with EAD and XML a plus

• Knowledge of modern and contemporary art a plus

Photograph Archivist – Montana Historical Society, Helena, MT

The Photograph Archivist is responsible for evaluating, acquiring, arranging, describing, and providing access to a wide variety of photographic images. In doing so, the Photograph Archivist is responsible for the development and care of existing photograph collections, the assessment and acquisition of new collections and dissemination of information from these collections on inquiries related to the history of Montana and the West. In so doing, the Photograph Archivist has the responsibility for cataloging images acquired so that they are accessible to the staff and the public.

Librarian – Memphis College of Art

Memphis College of Art seeks a full-time librarian to partner with its current librarian in all aspects of management and leadership of a small, visual arts-oriented library. Duties include collection development, assisting with reference services, circulation, instruction and information literacy, cataloging, serials management, ILS maintenance, supervision of student workers, assessment and accreditation reporting, planning and managing the library budget.  Evening and weekend responsibilities. The MCA librarians report to the Dean/VPAA.

MLS from an ALA-accredited program required; academic degree in a visual arts field preferred; excellent computer skills; ability to collaborate with faculty, Admissions, and other staff offices; 3-5 years professional experience.

ART BIBLIOGRAPHER, ASIAN LANGUAGES – THE CLEVELAND MUSEUM OF ART

The Cleveland Museum of Art’s Ingalls Library and Museum Archives seeks qualified candidates for its Art Bibliographer – Asian Languages position.  The Art Bibliographer— Asian Languages works in conjunction with the Director of Library and Archives to ensure the development of the Ingalls Library collection in accordance with the written Collection Development Policy and through established relationships with vendors world-wide. The position is responsible for the identification and selection of books and other intellectual materials in Asian languages for the museum library.  Typical duties include working on matters pertaining to selection of materials and overall collection development including establishing book selection policy and criteria for acquisitions based on knowledge of the literature and needs of current and future researchers; maintains primary responsibility for the library’s acquisition of new materials in Asian languages through established relationships with key vendors; and assists with the receipt and processing of all Asian language gifts, exchanges, and transfer materials in all formats including evaluation of materials for relevance to collection.

A Master’s degree (M.A.) or Ph.D in art history required.  Knowledge of art historical literature.  Foreign language fluency in either Chinese or Japanese required; reading knowledge of Korean and whichever of Chinese or Japanese where fluency is lacking.  Master’s degree in Library Science (M.L.S.) from an ALA accredited program preferred.   Prior experience working in an academic or research library, preferably in an acquisitions department, and familiarity with integrated library systems and OCLC are desirable.  Excellent research, oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated organizational, decision-making and problem-solving skills including the ability to create policy; supervise staff, interns, and volunteers; prioritize and manage workflow, projects and multiple tasks while meeting deadlines and solving problems in a dynamic environment.   Must have experience developing and managing relationships with vendors, publishers and interface providers. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with institutional departments, community partners and potential donors.
