SEI Registration Reminder

Liaisons all play essential roles in our group, and have the opportunity to network and support their fellow members. Below are some of the ways in which you can help out. Feature Post Writer

Our team of writers contribute posts on topics relevant to the field of art librarianship. These include posts exploring current hot topics, interviews, success stories, and more. Potential discussion topics might relate to art & design, copyright, education, and other subjects that can spark a conversation.

Chapter Liaison

This liaison keeps the blog updated with news and opportunities from the ARLIS/NA Chapters. They also reach out to the chapters on behalf of ArLiSNAP when necessary.

Social Media Liaison

This role involves engaging readers through our various social media accounts, encouraging and moderating discussions on Facebook and Twitter. Their role is to promote the most recent discussion, and explore different ways of interacting with members, such as Twitter chats and collaborative Pinterest boards. This liaison will be expected to contribute on an approximately weekly basis.

Meet your new ArLiSNAP Co-Moderator, Tiffany Saulter!


Hi, I’m Tiffany and I am very excited and happy to accept the ArLiSNAP co-moderator position for the 2015-2017 term. I really enjoyed meeting a number of ArLiSNAP members at the Fort Worth ARLIS conference and look forward to meeting more of you.

I am originally from South Florida and am currently a Pauline A. Young Resident and Affiliate Assistant Librarian at the University of Delaware in the Manuscripts and Archives department, working on creating fuller descriptions for the large number of legacy materials/items that make up our collections as well as digitizing many of these same materials. I am also involved in the Delaware Valley digital humanities community through PhillyDH. I have a B.A. in Digital Art from Stetson University and a M.A. in Art History from the University of Miami, with a focus on video and film art. I received my MLIS degree from Indiana University.

I have a fervent love for pop culture and media/television in general and can often be found making random pop culture references that no one gets.I look forward to serving as co-moderator in the coming two years and meeting and working with more of you. ARLIS/NA SoCal Chapter Travel Awards – Applications due Saturday

Just one last reminder that the ARLIS/NA SoCal Chapter is offering two travel awards for the 43rd Annual ARLIS/NA Conference taking place in Fort Worth, TX, March 19-23, 2015. Attending the conference is a great opportunity to network with other professionals in the art libraries and archives field as well as gain insight on growing trends and important issues. The last day to submit your application is this Saturday, January 31st.

The Southern California Chapter of ARLIS/NA is currently offering two travel awards to support and encourage involvement by helping defray the costs of attending the conference. We encourage all to apply!

To apply, please read the eligibility requirements, selection guidelines, and conditions of receiving the awards below and submit a letter of application. Letters of application are due by Saturday, January 31. Recipients will be notified by Saturday, February 14.

Letter of Application:
The letter of application should briefly outline your reasons for attending the conference as well as a short biographical statement listing your employment history, educational background, professional activities, and how much funding you may be receiving from your institution (if any). Please limit application letters to two pages and specify in your email for which award you are applying.

Selection will be weighted toward those applicants who best fulfill the following guidelines:
1. Are attending the ARLIS/NA annual conference for the first time, and/or
2. Are actively participating in the conference in such roles as speaker, moderator, recorder, workshop attendee, etc.

1. Award winner must commit to attending the SoCal Chapter meeting at the conference.
2. Award winner must submit a written conference report for publication in Canvas, the SoCal Chapter newsletter. This report should include an account of the recipient’s personal conference experiences and how the award contributed to professional development.

The student travel award supports and encourages student involvement with ARLIS/NA and the SoCal Chapter, $300 will be granted to the award recipient.

Please welcome Hilary Price to the ArLiSNAP team as our newest Job Postings Liaison / Feature Writer!

Hilary will be keeping us up-to-date on employment opportunities in the art librarianship field. Welcome! archivephoto Hi.  I’ve used ArLiSNAP since I began my MLS in 2013 and I’m so excited to be on the team.  Before I decided to pursue my MLS at Queens College, I studied art history at The New School, and fine art at Tyler School of Art.  While I still love making and looking at art, I’m excited about connecting people with resources as a librarian and archivist. In the spring semester I will graduate with my MLS, but in the meantime, I’ll be working part-time at three different libraries in New York.  I’ll continue my work as graduate fellow at Barnard Archives and Special Collections, begin a project assistant position at the Brooklyn Museum Library, and get a taste of the corporate archive world at the Citi Center for Culture (archive of Citibank).  My interests and studies are primarily directed toward archives, new technologies, and art librarianship. Thanks to Ellen and Rachel for all their work, and for giving me the opportunity to assist.  I look forward to posting.

Hello, ArLiSNAPers – I am the Metadata Librarian for Image Collections at Cornell University. I started at Cornell as the art history image cataloger in April 2013 and, in January 2014, moved into my current role. In the past, I have worked in UC Irvine’s University Art Gallery, the San Diego Museum of Art Library, the Ricker Library of Architecture and Art, and the UIUC’s Visual Resource Center. I have additional experience working in an artist’s studio and in digital publishing. I have a B.A. in art history and completed my MLIS at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in Spring 2012. My professional experience and interests include a mixture of art librarianship, visual resource management, and image cataloging. I’m also very interested in research design and digitization projects. I look forward to writing for the blog and hopefully hearing from you all – thanks to Ellen and Rachel for the opportunity!

Having graduated from Pratt Institute’s School of Information and Library Science this past May, I now hold a Master’s degree in Library Science with a concentration in Special Libraries, as well as an advanced certificate in Archives. This past spring I also attended the 6th International Conference on Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in Libraries in Istanbul. While there, I presented a paper about the effect of digital resources on user experience, a topic in which I continued to be interested, especially as it relates to digital renderings of artworks.

Over the past few years I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of library settings, including the Pace Law School Library, the library at Marvel Comics, and the ABC No Rio Zine Library. Currently, I work as the librarian at Gagosian Gallery in New York City, where I catalog books, provide reference services, and assist in collection development. I am continually provided the opportunity to learn about the art world as I find resources and answer questions for staff members. However, I am essentially a solo librarian, so I look forward to being able to engage you, my fellow art librarians, both established and aspiring, in topics that are currently affecting art librarianship. Hello out there! My name is Dana Statton and I am currently pursuing my MLIS at Louisiana State University. I’ve come to libraries in a fairly round about way (it seems like most of us do), and also have my Masters in Art History as well as my Masters of Fine Art in Photography. I’ve spent most of my time in museums, having worked at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery as a Graduate Intern in the Photography Department as well as having worked at the more local LSU Museum of Art as a Curatorial Assistant.

I currently work in the Special Collections library at LSU as a graduate student in the Manuscripts processing department and am loving it. My day to day activities consist of processing archival collections that deal mainly with Louisiana history or persons. My professional interests lie in Archives, Rare Books, and Art Librarianship. As a new Feature Post Writer, I look forward to talking with all you fellow ArLiSNAP-ers and more than welcome any comments or topics you would like to see addressed.

Hello everyone! My name is Monica Kenzie and I’m excited to be serving as a new ArLiSNAP Job Postings Liaison! I graduated this spring from the University of Michigan School of Information with a Master of Science in Information. My arts background includes a BA from the University of Michigan in Art History and experience working in a variety of arts institutions in many different capacities. I served as director of a contemporary art gallery in New York City, communications assistant at the University of Michigan Museum of Art and have held several internships and volunteer positions as well at the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Folkways Institute and the Detroit Historical Society. For about a year and a half, I have been working part time at the Detroit Institute of Arts in the research library and archives cataloguing, working with archival collections and performing reference services. I am currently looking for a full time position, so I know the all the hard work that goes into job hunting! As I continue my search, I plan on sharing my journey, and of course job postings and continuing education opportunities as well, to help fellow new-comers find great jobs and keep learning. Position Available: The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. This is a 100%, twelve-month, tenure-system appointment.


Responsibilities: Reporting to the University Librarian, the Head of Ricker Library of Architecture and Art will provide leadership for and supervision of library services to students, faculty, and other scholars using the Ricker. The Head of Ricker is a member of the University Library’s Arts and Humanities Division.


As Architecture and Art Librarian, the successful candidate will:

·         Provide leadership for the Ricker Library of Architecture and Art;

·         Lead and manage collection development and management in architecture, architectural history, art history, studio arts, design and related disciplines;

·         Liaise with the University Library Visual Resources Collection, School of Architecture, School of Art and Design, Krannert Art Museum, and other units in the College of Fine and Applied Arts and across campus;

·         Provide information literacy services for architecture, architectural history, art history, studio arts, design and related disciplines;

·         Manage the provision of and contribute to  effective, responsive reference service

·         Coordinate the Ricker Library web site management, digital projects, development and management of additional collections, specific library programs and operations, and participate in other projects and activities;

·         Work with Library Advancement to secure additional funding for the Art and Architecture Library;

·         Contribute to the national and international reputation of the University Library through professional research, service, and collaboration with appropriate colleagues and organizations


As Unit Head of the Ricker Library of Architecture and Art, the successful candidate will:

·         Oversee all administrative aspects of the unit;

·         Mentor, motivate, supervise, and train staff in the unit;

·         Direct the selection, training, evaluation, and deployment of support staff members and graduate assistants/hourly staff in Ricker Library;

·         Prepare regular and on-demand reports for the Ricker Library, including but not limited to strategic plans, annual goals, annual reports, and budget proposals and request;

·         Collaborate collegially and cooperatively with other personnel throughout the Library, including those in the Ricker Library, other unit heads, the Associate University Librarian for User Services, and the Associate University Librarian for Collections and Technical Services.




Required Qualifications:

·         ALA-accredited MLS degree or equivalent;

·         Advanced degree in Art History, Architecture, or related field;

·         3 years of relevant experience working in a research library or a related setting;

·         Demonstrated skills in managing programs and bringing projects to completion;

·         Evidence of research, publication, and service consonant with University standards for tenure and promotion at the level of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor


Preferred Qualifications:

·         Managerial and organizational skills required to oversee an extensive program of acquisitions, collection management, and public engagement activities;

·         Knowledge of at least one foreign language of importance to the field of art history;

·         Demonstrated understanding or familiarity of current theory and practice of art and architecture librarianship;

·         Knowledge of current trends in scholarship and teaching of art and architecture;

·         Clear understanding and vision for the use of new technologies (digitization and beyond) in the field art and architecture librarianship;

·         Experience of building and sustaining library or research collections in all formats;

·         Experience providing instruction or workshops in an academic library or similar research environment;

·         Demonstrated ability to work collegially and cooperatively with others in a team environment;

·         Experience in grant writing and development;

·         Evidence of bibliographical and scholarly accomplishment
