Art Library Students and New ARLIS Professionals (ArLiSNAP) seeks candidates for its next Co-Moderator.
The Co-Moderator position is an opportunity for a student or new professional to develop their leadership skills while providing a valuable service to ARLIS/NA. ArLiSNAP’s next Co-Moderator will serve a term of two years, working alongside ArLiSNAP’s current 2014-2016 Co-Moderator, Rachel Schend.
Co-Moderator responsibilities include advancing the concerns of students and new professionals within ARLIS/NA, facilitating special projects, organizing ArLiSNAP’s annual meeting activities for the national ARLIS/NA conference, and contributing to the organization of other conference forums such as the New Voices panel. The future Co-Moderator will be heavily involved with the administration of the ArLiSNAP blog and social media accounts, and will serve as a representative and liaison between ArLiSNAP and other groups within, and outside, ARLIS/NA. Candidates do not need to be present at the Fort Worth conference in order to run; however, they should plan to be present at ARLIS/NA conferences for the following two years. Candidates must be ARLIS/NA members.
To announce your candidacy, please comment on this post with a short biography, including the merits you would bring to this position, your professional or educational experience, and your thoughts on future goals for the ArLiSNAP group. Please post your candidacy by Wednesday, March 11th.
Elections will be held using SurveyMonkey from Thursday, March 12th through Wednesday, March 18th. The results will be announced on Thursday, March 19th 2015.

Interested in coming to the ARLIS/NA Conference this March, but hoping for a cheaper stay? A few of us on the ArLiSNAP team are looking into staying at the Downtown East Motel 6. For the weekend of March 20-23, a room with two queen beds is going for $62.99USD on Friday and Saturday, and $55.99USD on Sunday. According to Google, the Motel 6 is a five to ten minute drive from the conference hotel, and we will organize for cabs to be shared between roommates whenever possible.

Proposals for the New Voices in the Profession session at the 2015 ARLIS-NA conference in Fort Worth, Texas (March 19-23) are now being accepted!
New Voices in the Profession showcases exceptional academic work by students and new professionals (under 5 years post MLS). Paper topics should relate strongly to Art and/or Visual Resources Librarianship, but also digital library projects, archives, library instruction, reference and the changing nature of libraries, among other topics. Paper topics that relate to the conference theme “New Frontiers on the Old Frontier” will be given special consideration.

The 2015 Gerd Muehsam Award
The Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA) sponsors the annual Gerd Muehsam Award, recognizing excellence in a graduate student paper or project on a topic relevant to art librarianship. ARLIS/NA established the award to honor the memory of Gerd Muehsam (1913-1979), distinguished scholar, teacher, and art bibliographer, whose support of and dedication to ARLIS/NA was an inspiration to her colleagues and students.
• Graduate students must have created the project or written the paper during the preceding 18 months while enrolled in an accredited graduate library program or in a post-graduate library school program in art history or a related discipline
• The paper or project must be in conjunction with a course assignment
• One submission is allowed per person or group
• Papers: The paper must be 10-25 pages, typed, double-spaced on single sides of 8.5 x 11 inch paper. The paper must include an abstract of 250 words. The title page must include a paper title, the name of the entrant and the institution attended, the name of the faculty member for whom it was written, and the course title. Applicant name and information should appear only on the title page. The bibliography and footnotes should follow an accepted format, such as the Chicago Manual of Style or The Elements of Style by Strunk and White. For group projects, all participant names and assigned roles should be included on the title page. In addition, authors must inform the committee chair if their contribution has been published previously or is being considered for publication.
• Internet projects: If an Internet project, a 250-word summary of the project, its URL, the name of the institution and course for which it was created, and the name of the faculty member assigning the project must be included. It must also be accessible to all of the committee members for review.
• All applicants must include their mailing addresses, email addresses, and telephone numbers with their applications.
• Papers and projects will be judged on their relevance to art librarianship or visual curatorship, depth of research and scholarship, quality of organization, appropriate use of terminology, style and readability, and originality of thought or observation.
• Entries must be postmarked or emailed by 5:00 P.M., PST, on Friday, December 5, 2014. They will not be returned. All applicants should receive notification of the results by February 15, 2015.

Poster Proposals for ARLIS/NA 2015: Deadline Approaching

The Fort Worth Conference Program Committee encourages fellow librarians, visual and media resource specialists, archivists, curators, museum professionals, educators, artists, designers, architects, historians, researchers, practitioners, students, and others across the horizon to submit pioneering ideas in a poster format. The many worthy proposers of papers and sessions which could not be accommodated in the conference program are encouraged to consider adapting their proposals to a poster format.
To quote from the 2014 Conference Poster Guidelines, “A poster consists of a visual display accompanied by pertinent handouts. . . . The visual poster display can take any form or look, provided it is confined to the 30” x 42” area. Creating the opportunity for conversation is the main goal of the poster session . . .”
Poster Session Coordinator Craig Bunch will be happy to answer all of your questions—or direct you to someone who can. Successful applicants will be notified in early November.

ARLIS/NA Multimedia & Technology Reviews Seeks Authors
ARLIS/NA Multimedia & Technology Reviews Co-editors are seeking volunteers to author reviews for the December 2014 issue of the Society’s newest online publication. ARLIS/NA Multimedia & Technology Reviews connects readers with new technologies and the multimedia landscape. Reviews will target projects, products, events, and issues within the broad realm of multimedia and technology related to arts scholarship, research, and librarianship.

Contributing to ARLIS/NA Multimedia & Technology Reviews is a great opportunity to get involved with the Society, learn about interesting new resources, and help shape the publication. So it’s one month since ARLIS/NA #42 and my life is back to normal. For me that means work and summer classes, and pondering the issues of arts librarianship. Washington DC invigorated and affirmed me, and yet, also challenged me with the realization that I have ALOT to learn. And since I have a small role on the planning committee for the 2015 conference, I now know we have a big act to follow. As a regional chapter travel award recipient, I was required to write a post-conference report for the chapter’s newsletter. I decided to post it here as well. Although it’s geared for the TX-MX audience, Arlisnappers may enjoy references both general and specific to themselves throughout. I encourage all students and new professionals to apply for their respective chapter travel awards for next year. You won’t regret it!
ARLIS/NA 2014 Conference Report, Washington, DC
If you had run into me on the first day of ARLIS/NA 2014, I think there would be no doubt as to the amount of excitement and nervous anticipation that I exuded. I was practically giddy just to be in Washington DC for my first ARLIS/NA conference. From the moment I knew that I would definitely be attending, I was scouring the conference schedule, planning how to get the most out of every session, workshop, and tour. It was frustrating to be sure! I must have changed my mind at least a half dozen times. There were just too many concurrent and/or overlapping events that piqued my curiosity to make it all doable without cloning myself. I will attempt to recap the highlights, although it will not fairly encompass the fun I also had in chance conversations and in friendships established from collegial rapport.
My conference began with the Society of the Cincinnati Tour on Thursday morning, followed by the Mentoring workshop in the afternoon. I was pleased to see this late add-on tour as my conference duties precluded attendance at any others. As a small tour group of five, we were treated to an intimate visit to the collection vault. One of the tour participants agreed to serve as my recorder for my session the next day. That was such a relief since I had attempted and failed to secure one prior to the conference! Afterwards, the workshop focused my goals in arts librarianship and paired me with Canadian librarian Jennifer Garland as my mentor. I am looking forward to a productive year to come with her guidance. Dinner with fellow first-time attendees Courtney Baron and Anna-Sophia Zingarelli-Sweet familiarized me with Penn Quarter as we enjoyed Mexican inspired fare and lively comparisons of our respective library schools and work experiences.
On Friday morning, I moderated the session Meet the Policy Experts, and then attended Pro amore liborum: Rare Book and Special Collections Librarianship in the afternoon. I mingled with several of the Texas contingency at our chapter meeting. Unfortunately, I missed the First Time Attendees’ Reception, but Friday night, after a visit and dinner with relatives in the area, I hung out with the ArLiSNAP (Art Library Students and New ARLIS Professionals) crowd at Capitol City Brewery across from the Grand Hyatt. Surrounded by some dangerously smart students as well as a few more mature, but no less enthusiastic professionals, I was delighted to finally meet in person some online friends that I have been communicating and collaborating with as a Discussion Liaison over the past year in ArLiSNAP. I volunteered for Exhibits set-up on Saturday morning early and although most of the work had already been completed by that time, I had a fortuitous encounter with a past ARLIS/NA President, Ted Goodman, who gave me a crash course in exhibits management. I couldn’t have received it from anyone more experienced or more versatile in this area! It was the perfect initiation for duties I will have in Fort Worth next year. I later wandered through the Eastern Market and found myself at Capitol Hill Books – the layout of which was both a treasure hunter’s dream and a librarian’s nightmare!
And yes, of course I bought a book there! After a Metro adventure back to the hotel, I enjoyed Retooling Art Reference and Information Services: Collaborative Tools, Strategies, and Models, and later, the Emerging Technology Forum. Following a spin through the Exhibit Hall and Posters, it was off to the Convocation and Reception at the Library of Congress, or as Susan Stamberg referred to it during her keynote address, “the Mothership” – a truly inspiring evening that I will always associate with an incredible experience.
I jumped up Sunday morning for an 8am ArLiSNAP business meeting and then sandwiched the Membership Brunch and Meeting between morning and afternoon sessions Collaborating to Achieve and Activist Outreach in the Book Arts. A pleasant surprise on Sunday evening occurred when I happened upon fellow chapter members on their way to dinner for an informal planning meeting for 2015. Together we digested the enormity of the task before us along with some excellent seafood. Thanks for inviting me along, ladies!
Is it any wonder that I was completely exhausted by the time I got home Monday afternoon? I had a fabulous time start to finish. My brain is still processing all the new information and ideas, yet I feel more clearly focused in the direction I want to go in future coursework and in dedication to finishing my degree in 2015. It was such a pleasure to meet, talk to, and learn from so many interesting people and to get to know some of our chapter members a little bit better. I cannot neglect to thank Cheryl Payne from MFAH for agreeing to be my roommate, although we had never met previously. My experience would not have been possible without the ARLIS/NA-TXMX chapter’s generous support, for which I am truly grateful. I look forward to seeing everyone again at the fall meeting in Orange, TX, and of course, for more artful adventures!

Calling all prospective mentors and mentees for the ARLIS/NA Yearlong Career Mentoring Program! This yearlong program begins with a workshop at the Washington, DC conference and continues until the 2015 Fort Worth conference. Our program has matched dozens of art library professionals in successful mentoring relationships and contributes to the wonderful bonds of cordial collegiality for which the Society is known.
While mentoring may seem like a time consuming venture, it is actually a rather straightforward, yet impactful, way to make a difference in our profession. You only need 1-2 hours a month!
Not sure if you’re ready to be a mentor?If you are active in the field of arts librarianship, there is a good chance you could be a mentor to a burgeoning professional. If you have ever participated in the Career Mentoring Program as a mentee, you are also likely qualified to serve as a mentor.
